The debate

Who won the debate?

In my opinion I believe that the winner of the debate from a public speaking point would have to be Hillary Clinton.  She spoke very professionally.  She knew her topics very well and knew how to go on with them.  Although at times she was very monotone she also looked very confident which kind of turned us away from her being monotone.  Unlike Trump she was aggressive and bullied her opponent.  Hillary spoke very clearly while Trump would sniff and his over use of hand motions would distract the audience.  When pressured by Trump she remained very calm and never got nervous.  When pressured she would come up with an answer to what he was asking without pause.
Although there were many good things about her in this debate there were some things that she could work on.  For example she referred to her family too many times.  Talking about her dads line of work and how he was a middle class man trying to make a living for his family.  She also talked about how her husband was in office and how he could he a great help with her.   She also promoted her book at one point during the debate, which in my eyes I feel that it is unprofessional to do.  Lastly one thing that I think that she can fix is her avoiding some of the questions that Trump asked her.

I think that Hillary did a great job speaking and stuck to what she believed.  She was never stumped by a question that was asked to her.  Although I don’t agree fully with her campaign I do thing that she seemed a little more prepared during this debate and knew what to say.

I am speech, how'd it go

I believe that my speech went okay.  I think that it was written well but I believe that it could have been spoken better.  I feel that for the next speech I can work memorizing my speech a little better so I can take out some of the stutters.  I feel that this will help my speech flow a lot better.  And for watching other people speak I feel that you could see tendencies that you should stay away from.  For example swaying and unneeded hand gestures.  One last thing that I feel that could get rid of is figuring out what to do with my hands and looking up more.

I am speech

As the character Rocky Balboa once said "Every champion was once a contender that refused

to give up".  If you keep on working hard you will achieve your ultimate goal no matter what

that is.  Hello everyone, my name is Joey Bramanti.  I originate from North Andover, MA but

attend Cheshire Academy where I am a postgraduate and play on the baseball team.  I’ve had

a long journey throughout my high school years fighting injury and getting back to where I am today.

During my sophomore year in high school I suffered from a bad ankle injury playing hockey.

I went feet first into the boards after losing an edge trying to stop and this resulted in me

breaking my right ankle.  I went through surgery and physical therapy and by the way it was

feeling I never thought it was going to be the same.  When I tried to play baseball I would just

suffer through pain and agony but I would try my best to fight through it.  I walked with a l

imp to favor my ankle and I couldn’t even tell.  My parents would always nag me to stop

limping but it was just a mental thing that I couldn’t get rid of.  One morning that fall now my

junior year about seven months into my recovery I felt less and less pain everyday

and was able to walk normal this because of my parents drilling it into my head that it

needed to stop and then suddenly all pain went away.

If my parents weren’t there to help me fight through this all I do not believe that I’d be where

I am today.  Everything about this was a humbling experience but it more so gave me a bigger

passion and a lot of fuel to become a better baseball player.  I had summer coaches telling me

that I wasn’t a great player and that I didn’t have what it takes to play at the highest level.

This would get me angry like I hope it would for any teenager.  This caused me to work

harder to better myself whether it was in the weight room, on the field or in the classroom.

would put my heart and soul into anything that I did from there on out so I couldn’t have

people tell me that I “wasn’t good enough”.  I also had many positive influences other than

my parents.  My high school baseball coach and hockey coach both thought that I would get

back on track and would be able to be at my full potential.  This was a confidence booster and

would help me push through pain.

This brings me to where I am now at Cheshire Academy, fully recovered knock on wood, in

the best shape of my life and playing the sport I love, baseball.  I am here at Cheshire because

I feel that an added year to boost my grades and baseball potential was a must.  This year will

give me more exposure to allow me to achieve the ultimate goal of mine, which is playing division 1 baseball.

So like Balboa said “Every champion was once a contender that refused to give up”.  Please

don’t give up on your goals and push yourself to be the best you can be in life no matter what you are doing.

Skills I have learned

During the last three weeks of Public Speaking I have learned many things to help me with my speaking.  I have seen many bad examples of public speaking including my own.  I believe that the Ted Talks have been great to help with seeing good examples and poor examples.  You can get a sense of what you have to do to engage a crowd in your speech.  If there is a bad speech you can see what they are doing wrong.  For example swaying, constant walking, monotone, too many hand movements and um’s and ah’s.  Seeing people make mistakes help you stay away from them and makes your speech’s better.

At first it is hard to get rid of the habits that you have had throughout your whole life.  It can make your speech feel very awkward trying to stay away from old habits.  Things that I need to work on while I speak are, me being monotone, swaying, and um’s.  I think to change me being monotone I have to read and know what I am talking about.  I tend to become very monotone and less enthusiastic when I am reading off of something that I haven’t read before.  But when I read something that I know about I am able to be enthusiastic and be very clear.  To get rid of the swaying I could maybe try walking around a little but not too excessively.  I think that if I were to walk a little it would get the itch out of me that I have to move around.
Public speaking is not a very easy task and tends to get people very nerves.  If you see what you are doing wrong I believe that it is easier to fix what you are doing wrong.  I think that this class will help me remove the ticks that I have when I am speaking in front of a group.

I am speech brainstorm

  • Pivotal experience in my life, breaking my ankle
  • In the class vs outside class, I think I am generally the same person maybe more of a hard worker outside the class
  • Influences, my dad, hitting coach, old coaches saying I didn't have the skill to play at the next level
  • Different aspects of my personality, can be outgoing but also can be shy and can be awkward
Outline
  1. Pivotal experience in my life (breaking my ankle)
  2. Influences (how my parents helped me push through it, how some of my coaches never thought I could play college baseball)

Bad Ted Talk

Bad Ted Talk

I chose this Ted talk because of the way he was speaking.  He was very monotone. He used a lot of um's and ah's for speech breaks.

Who I am

Hello my name is Joey Bramanti; I am from North Andover Massachusetts.  I am 18 years old and I am at Cheshire Academy to help further my academics and to play baseball.  I took this year to raise my grades as well as my SAT scores.  I also took this year to get stronger, to help further my baseball career.
I am a third generation in my family. By the name of, Joseph Francis Bramanti.  My father goes by Jay and my grandfather went by Papa Joe.  I hope to carry this tradition on with my child and I hope he will do the same too.
One of the main reasons that I am taking this year is because my sophomore in high school I had a serious ankle injury.  I broke my fibula, displaced my tibia and tore a bunch of ligaments in my ankle, playing hockey.  I got sick from my surgery.  This caused me to miss a week of school making me fall behind in class.  The next month I missed another two weeks of school because I was sick from Mono.  This allowed me to fall very behind in school, making my grades suffer.  Along with being behind in class I was falling very behind on the field missing my whole high school season and summer.  When I came back to baseball my junior year I was still not 100% and wasn’t at my full potential.  So now I am here using my senior year in high school as another junior year.
Baseball is very important to me, this is because my father was a very good player and he started me at a young age..  I feel that it gives me freedom to do something I love.  It also gives me something to push myself in along with school.  I feel that I get a good balance from school and baseball.  It is something that I want to do in college.  I think that it will help with time management to get schoolwork done and baseball.  I feel that if I didn’t play a sport in college that I would get very bored and not know what to do with myself.

I am taking this class because my parents told me that it would help me further on in life when I have to give presentations or speeches. I agreed with them because I have never been great at giving presentations in class.  I believe that it will help with all the nit picky things and help me become a more fluent presenter.  I would like to break all of the bad habits that I have gained over the years while speaking publicly.  I want to get rid of the “um’s” and “ah’s”.  I believe that if you are a good speaker you will be able to go a lot further.  Speaking well makes you sound smarter than you are.  Especially in job interviews if you are not using the “um’s” and “ah’s” you will appeal to the people you are trying to get a job from.
